Omaha poker is similar to the Texas Holdem with the variation being with four pocket cards being dealt. Another striking difference of the Omaha high low is that pot is split between the best high rank cards and the best low rank card and it is obligatory that two cards in the final show down should be from one of the four cards that were initially dealt for the player.
The sequence of playing Omaha high low can be summarized as:- • The blind bets are initiated before the cards are dealt • The dealing of four pocket cards is done by the dealer • Betting round takes place • The dealer burns one card that will not be used by the players to form a hand and displays the three community cards in the middle of the table • Betting round takes place • Again one card is burnt and the fourth community card is placed in the middle of the table • Betting round takes place • Again one card is burnt and the fifth community card is placed in the middle of the table • All players are to show down and the winner is selected. Before playing Omaha high low you need to understand the reading of the cards based on their ranks correctly. The eight-or-better cards qualify to be good lows to split the pot. What is a low hand in Omaha high low? A low hand can be a five card combination of straights of 8-7-6-5-4, 7-6-5-4-3-2, 6-5-4-3-2, 5-4-3-2-A; the lower hand, the best chances is there for the low split share. 8-7-6-5-4 is the worst form of low hand and 5-4-3-2-A is the best form of low hand. Nut lows in Omaha high low can be those combinations like 8-7-6-K-Q, A-2-3-K-Q, 7-6-4-K-A etcetera, which one can hold with reference to the community cards. Nut lows are stronger than normally the best low hands. It can be quite tricky when you have been imagining splitting the pot with your low, but the now nut low hand runs away with the pot after the show down. The high winner can also be the low winner at times when he takes the whole of the pot. In some cases if there is only high with one and low with another the pot is split between the two as rules dictate. If there are two lows, the half pot goes to the high and the remaining half is divided between the two tied up lows. |
